In June of 1955, the Lake City council approved a lease from the Michigan State Conservation Department for the Missaukee Mountain Ski Club.  The lease of 93.5 acres just north of Lake City, is perpetual as long as the land is used for public purposes.  The cost to the City, $1.00.

The Missaukee Mountain Ski Club was built by volunteers and donations from the community to include a set of tow ropes, a lodge, and groomed trails.  For many years, the Mountain hosted events for Winter Festival, including the coronation of the first Festival Queen in 1956.

Seventy-seven years later, Missaukee Mountain is still overseen and operated by volunteers and relies on the generous financial support of the community.  Lift passes and rental equipment costs are kept low so skiing and riding are affordable for kids of all ages.  Tubing, cross-country skiing, and the lodge are open to the public at no charge.
